ABORTION!

IS IT MURDER?

By E. L. Bynum

"Thou shalt not kill." Exodus 20:15

In this age of moral laxness, the laws of God have been set aside in the name of freedom. The moral codes of the past have given way to "situation ethics." Sexual promiscuity and pre-marital sex is advocated by many educators and ministers. Mothers are insisting that birth control pills be given to their unmarried daughters, by the family doctor or college infirmary. Movies, television, magazines and pornography of every kind is being used to train and inflame our youth. Modern sex education has become the tool of the devil, because the biology and mechanics of sex are being taught without any moral code of restraint. The classroom has no place for the Bible and prayer.

Modern dress styles are designed to make the sidewalk, classroom and living room into a "girlie" show. Little has been left for the imagination. Mini-skirts and hot pants have been designed to break down any form of modesty and morality that still exists in our society. The old striptease is out, for who wants to pay to see something that you can see on the street free of charge. Movies are dirtier than ever. Live stage shows draw a crowd by staging wild bizarre sex acts that are real in every way.

What is the result? Venereal disease and illegitimate births are increasing among young people at an unprecedented rate. We quote the following from the bulletin of Planned Parenthood Assoc. of Lubbock, Inc., Vol. 2, Num. 3 April 1971. "Teenagers largely account for startling increase in illegitimacy. The rate of illegitimate births in the United States has nearly doubled during the last decade, but the causes of this phenomena remain elusive." (Note by ELB: Anyone who is not morally and spiritually blind should be able to see the 'causes of this phenomena'!) . . . The nation's teenagers, who are more sexually active than ever -- and who have contributed most heavily to the rise in illegitimacy -- generally do not realize how easy it is to become pregnant. Even those who do, do not have medically prescribed contraceptives readily available to them. Nor do most have abortion as a ready option should they find themselves pregnant out of wedlock. From 1965 to 1968 illegitimacy rates actually declined among adult American women. But this decline was offset by a tremendous increase in illegitimacy among teenagers, who comprised about 70 per cent of the unmarried population. What is the solution? "Dr. Cutright urges the establishment of Government-financed family planning clinics that would serve any woman who comes in, backed up by abortion on request to deal with contraceptive failures. The schools would do best to simply post the locations of the nearby clinics. And without 'condoning or condemning the non- marital sex,' the schools might also try to give teen-agers a realistic picture of the risk of pregnancy."

The solution proposed by Planned Parenthood is typical of many educators, doctors and religious organizations. Government financed birth control clinics which "would serve any woman who comes in", regardless of age or marital status, is the answer, so they say. When this fails, "abortion on request", with good surgical procedures would solve everything. Of course the schools must teach sex education, but there must be no "condoning or condemning" of "non-marital sex". What nonsense! Why not hand out loaded guns to children without "condoning or condemning" violence and bloodshed, backed up by free funerals and free hospital care "on request?" You might as well give small boys a box of matches every day without "condoning or condemning" arson.

We shall prove from science and the Bible, that ABORTION IS MURDER! Of course the Bible is the final authority in faith and morals.

Our minds have been conditioned to accept the idea that an unborn baby is something less than human. We constantly hear the unborn child called a "fetus". Somehow "fetus" does not quite sound human to most people. It is easier to think of destroying a fetus, than to think of killing a baby. Why call it a FETUS, when God calls it a babe or child?

The Bible Speaks

THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost . . . that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost." Matt. 1:18,20. See also Luke 1:30-37. This was the most important birth of human history. We believe that God became man at the moment of conception.

Mary had conceived while still a virgin, and even Joseph was confused about it until the angel of the Lord enlightened him. There was no government financed agency to provide "abortion on demand". It almost seems sacrilegious to propose the following question. What if Mary had obtained an abortion? Would this have only meant the taking of a fetus or a nameless bulk of tissue and muscle? Not according to the above scriptures!

THE BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST. John's mother was Elisabeth. During the 6th month of her pregnancy, she was visited by the virgin Mary. "When Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb." Luke 1:41. See also Luke 1:35-44. PLEASE NOTE that God does not say that the fetus leaped in her womb, but "the babe leaped in her womb." The Greek word for "babe" in the above text is "brephos". In Luke 2:12, 16, the same Greek word is used to describe Christ in the manger. "Brephos" is also translated "babe" in I Peter 2:2, "child" in II Tim. 3:15; "infant" in Luke 18:15; and "young child" in Acts 7:19. These scriptures show that God uses the same word to describe a child whether it is unborn, new-born or sometime later.

THE BIRTH OF JEREMIAH. God told Jeremiah: "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." Jer. 1:5. God formed him in his mother's body, but God knew him before he was formed, and ordained him a prophet unto the nations. What if his mother had sought an abortion?

THE BIRTH OF ISAIAH, JOB AND PAUL. "The Lord formed me from the womb to be his servant." Isa. 49:5. "Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and has fenced me with bones and sinews." Job 10:11. "But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace . . . " Gal. 1:15. These scriptures make it plain, that God forms the babe in the womb, clothes it with skin and flesh, gives the bone and sinew and then separates it from the womb. There is no room for abortion.

THE BIRTH OF DAVID. "Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret . . . Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them." Psa. 139:13-16. It was David in the womb, not just a little bundle of nerves and muscle. God saw him, formed him and caused the record book on high to contain this information. David testifies in Psa. 51:5, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." It was David that was conceived, it was David that was shapened or given shape in the womb. If David's mother had obtained an abortion, it would have been murder!

Science Speaks

There are 46 chromosomes in the nucleus of a human cell. (Animals have a different number according to species). Normally the human cell will contain 46 chromosomes, with one exception. The cell furnished by the father contains only 23, and so does the mother's. At the time of conception, these two cells unite and form a new cell of 46 chromosomes. This fertilized egg is no longer a part of father or mother but the first cell of a new human being. Successive cell division result in the development of a new individual.

According to science this new individual goes through two stages before birth. These are known as the "embryonic" and "fetal" periods. The "embryonic . . . period ends when the external form of the embryo begins to resemble clearly the newborn of the group to which it belongs. The next period, culminating in birth, is spoken of as the fetal period. Likewise a distinction is made between the embryo and the fetus. In human development this transition occurs at approximately the end of the 9th week after fertilization. At this time the embryonic clefts (harelip) of the face disappear, the paddle like embryonic limb buds develop free fingers and toes and so take on the form of the human limbs . . . After these changes and until birth the distinctly human -- appearing embryo is technically a fetus." Britannica, 1968 edition.

Only for scientific and medical purposes should this new individual be called an embryo or fetus. This new individual is formed by "successive cell divisions" and is not receiving new cells from its mother. The new individual is protected, and fed through the mother's body, but it is gross ignorance to contend that it is only a growth on the mother's body. It is just as distinct and separate from the mother's body as it will be some 9 months later when birth takes place. It is true that it could not survive apart from the mother's body, but it is also true that it could not survive apart from mother's care after it is born. Mother or some substitute must care for the baby. The baby grows after birth by "successive cell divisions", in exactly the same manner that it grew before birth in the mother's womb.

Let me emphasize. The only cell that mother contributed was the first one and it only contained one half the normal amount of chromosomes. The father furnishes the other cell with 23 chromosomes. When these two cells meet and combine, then conception has taken place and a new person is formed. After this, the father contributes as many new cells to the new person, as does the mother, and that is zero number. After this, the baby is as much a part of the father's body as it is the mother's body!! The baby is nourished through the umbilical by the mother, but nourished only. It receives no cells, no flesh, and no new or additional life from the mother. It is not a part of her that may be removed as a wart or tumor.

I say it reverently and not in jest; but human being could have been reproduced in the same manner as chickens if God had so willed. The fertilized chicken egg that is placed in the incubator to hatch, is not a part of the hen's body. She furnished half the chromosomes and she also furnished the nourishment, that is inside the shell of the egg to nourish the developing chick before it is hatched. But the hen does not furnish any additional cells, life or body to the chick. Reasoning based on this type of knowledge has led many scientists to believe that they can conceive and grow babies in a test tube. (We believe this would be wicked to even try such a thing.)

If the mother can arrange an "abortion upon demand", the father should be able to do the same thing. He furnished as many of the cells as the mother, and the baby is as much a part of his body as it is hers. (The only difference would be that the privacy of the woman's body would be violated by carrying out the father's demand for abortion.) Neither one should be able to demand abortion. No doctor or parent has the right to murder an innocent little baby, six months before it is born or six months after it is born.

Please notice how quickly the baby develops. Within 4 weeks it has developed the heart, limb buds and muscles tissue. Within 5 weeks it develops ears, eyes and minute hands. "At 8 weeks . . . its features are recognizably human." -- World Book Encyclopedia. "From about two weeks after conception, the fetus is in almost constant motion. By 8 weeks it has all its organs . . . legs, arms, feet, hands, ears and looks like a human being. It often sucks its thumb at this stage. There is a definite heartbeat. It waves its arms and legs and if removed from the uterus, often struggles to take a breath into its lungs. It answers all the ordinary criteria for life. Frequently a 3 month old fetus removed from the uterus will struggle for life as long as two or three hours." -- Dr. R. V. Jaynes, obstetrician/ gynecologist.

"Medical scientists claim they are creating human life in a test tube. You can't call it something else in the womb." -- Dr. William Lynch, Boston gynecologist.

What Is Abortion?

More people would oppose abortion if the really knew what it is like. In the next 4 paragraphs we are quoting Dr. Forrest C. Stevenson, Certified Marriage Counselor of Brighton, Michigan.

"1. There are four types of abortions. The first is a suction type of abortion in which a tube is inserted into the womb and there creates a powerful vacuum which tears the fetus from the womb in a mass of blood and tissue which is then removed from the mother. This method is used in the earlier stage of a pregnancy.

"2. Second is the curette-type of abortion in which a spoon-shaped instrument with sharp edges is inserted and is used to cut up the baby and separate it from the womb. Often because of inadequate dilation, the surgeon who is performing the abortion has to use his hands to crush the baby's head because it is too large to be removed successfully.

"3. A third type of abortion is very similar to a Caesarean operation in which through abdominal surgery, the baby is removed. This baby will be alive at the time it is removed from the mother's body. It will be moving its arms and legs. Often it will be crying. It will be struggling for air. Unfortunately this baby's lungs are not yet adequately developed so that it can breathe air, and after a time -- after a few hours of crying, and moving, and thrashing about -- it finally dies.

"4. The fourth type of abortion is the Salt Brine technique, sometimes called salting down. A large needle is inserted into the womb and through this needle most of the fluids are removed, and then a strong salt solution is injected into the mother. The baby thrashes around violently and unless there is an anesthesia, the mother will experience extreme pain during this period. And, of course, if there is anesthetization, there is an increased danger to her life. The baby is literally pickled in this salt brine and after a few days it is delivered as a stillbirth."

The Bible condemns The Killing Of The Unborn

"Thou shalt not kill." Exo. 20:15. The death penalty is God's judgment upon those who commit murder. "And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." Gen. 9:5,6. Abortion is the shedding of blood. The unborn baby has blood, and it is its own blood. God makes no distinction between the murdering of people of different ages.

In Exodus 20 we are told, "Thou shalt not kill", and in the very next chapter we are given further information about an unborn child. "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life." Exo. 21:22,23. Injury to an expectant mother will often cause a premature birth, sometimes the baby will live and sometimes it will die. The guilty man was punished according to the judgment determined by her husband and the judge.. However, "If any mischief follow," that is if the mother or infant die, "then thou shalt give life for life." If the mother or infant died, then the death penalty was pronounced upon the guilty man. (This interpretation of the above text is supported by Keil and Delitzsch and many other scholars.) What should the penalty be for an abortionists who deliberately sets out to kill the baby?

Children are an heritage of the Lord. "Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward." Psa 127:3. God often gives children in answer to prayer, and causes the barren to bear children. (See Gen. 17:15,16; 25:21; 29:31; 30:22; I Sam. 1:6-20).

The Shame Of America

A number of states have recently liberalized their abortion laws. Billboards are now appearing along the highways in the eastern part of the U.S., "Want An Abortion? Call This Number", followed by the phone number of the "referral service." These "referral services" may cost from $60 to several hundred dollars. Zero Population Growth Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Los Altos, Calif., offers a unique service. They have accumulated information on doctors, hospitals and costs around the country, and have stored this information in a computer. "When a pregnant woman anywhere in the U.S. calls ZPG, an AID (Abortion Information Data Bank) staffer feeds the caller's name and other data into the computer. Within five minutes, the machine produces a printout, listing eight or ten doctors and clinics nearest the caller, with fees and other pertinent facts. The printout is then mailed to her. AID charges nothing, but asks women who can afford it to send in a $5 donation."

ABORTION is big business! In the first year of New York's liberalized law, over 125,000 out of state women and 125,000 New York women received abortions. Their law allows abortion up until the 6th month of pregnancy. (Although we know many prematurely born infants would survive in the 6th month.)

California's new law allows abortion up to the 26th week and became effective November 8, 1967. The following figures reflect the rapid increase in abortion under this new law: November and December, 1967, 518; 1968, 5,030; Jan. to Sept. 1969, 9,169; 1970, 60,000; and over 100,000 projected for 1971. In spite of all the fancy reasons given by those who approve abortion, 91.6% of those in California gave as their reason "mental health". Only 5.6% gave rape or incest as the reason for abortion. Only 2.8% gave any other reason. "Mental health" can be stretched to cover almost any conceivable situation. According to Dr. Setvenson, in case of rape or incest, if it "is reported within 12 hours' time, there is a medical examination to gain legal evidence which eliminates any possibility of a pregnancy." Over 55% of those in California who obtained abortions had never been legally married.

In Vancouver, British Columbia during the first year of their new liberalized law, abortions increased by 800%. In the first 9 months of Britain's Abortion Acts, 543 girls under the age of 16 had abortions. Three girls aged 11, six age 12, twenty-one age 13, and 150 aged 14 had abortions during that period. In England, the abortionists hire touts to pick up business. An American woman journalist went to the London Airport wearing a loose fitting coat. Within 30 minute's time, 4 different touts offered to send her to a doctor for an abortion.

If she has the money, a woman can arrange an abortion by telephone with a New York tout, fly in to New York, have the abortion and fly out in a few hours. Abortion is a nice name for "murder for money." Legalized abortion is supposed to free us from illegal quack abortionists. In Sweden where abortion has been liberalized for 10 years, illegal abortion has increased if any thing. "In Sweden, if the child has not been killed by the operation, they drown it in a bucket like a kitten. The child will kick miserably until it dies. They also do experiments on aborted babies. Put them in simulated wombs and feed them through the cord, poking them now and again to see if they are still alive. Why not, I was told -- no one wants these babies." -- Mrs. Jill Knight, member of Parliament, England.

Is abortion right, if there is a chance the child will be deformed? According to statistics, if a mother has German Measles during pregnancy, less than one baby out of four will have any sort of physical or mental impairment. Instead of killing all four unborn babies, it would more merciful to wait until they are born and then kill the one deformed baby. If you can decide in advance that because a child may be mentally deficient or physically deformed that it must be eliminated before birth, why not pass a law to destroy those who have already been born in that condition? Why not pass a law to destroy the old folks and all others who are a burden to society? Hitler's Nazi Germany killed the Jews and we kill the babies. We are on the way to killing those who are too old, too black, too religious or too politically undesirable.

Some ask, "Doesn't the woman have the right to decide whether she wants to have a baby, and doesn't a couple have the right to regulate the size of their family?" Any such decision must be made before conception. The unmarried have no legal or moral right to conceive children.

Is The U.S. Suffering From National Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a "mental derangement characterized by the presence of conflicting impulses, emotions, and ideas, and resulting in a disintegration of personality . . ." --Britannica Dict., Vol. 2. This is commonly called a "split mind" or "split personality". We will note some of the symptoms evident in our society. The bleeding heart liberals have been able to stop the legal execution of criminals, for none have been executed since 1967, but many of these same people support abortion, the killing of the innocent. War with its killing must be stopped at all cost, but it is okay to kill thousands of babies. Government must spend billions to care for the old, but the unborn must be destroyed. We must have safer cars, no matter the cost, but we must have legal abortion on demand. The government must provide billions to care for the sick and prolong life, but the innocent unborn who cannot speak for themselves must be slaughtered by surgery. Who says that these children are unwanted and unloved? God loves them!

If this isn't "National Schizophrenia", then what is it? There is something wrong with a nation that permits such things. There is something wrong with that part of the medical profession who endorse such a thing for profit. Preachers who endorse it, surely have no scripture to stand on. The preacher who is silent must have very little courage. There is a rotting sickness in our land that is growing at awful speed. Any society that permits the murder of its unborn will not long survive.

Every civilized nation has had laws to protect the unborn. A surgeon may remove a wart or tumor without the passing of new law, but new laws have to be passed to allow abortion. The conscience of man tells him it is wrong. The doctors who advocate liberal abortion laws know it is wrong. The "Hippocrates Oath" has been taken by most doctors. Many have it hanging in their office. It reads, "To none will I give a deadly drug, even if solicited, nor offer counsel to such an end, and no woman will I give a destructive suppository, but guiltless and hallowed will I keep my art." The Bible says, "Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person." Deut. 27:25.

Reprinted from the Life Advocate

By Thea Spitz

After reviewing the April 1996 issue of the LIFE ADVOCATE, I noticed that a 6 or 7 inch square had been cut out of one of the pages. Ron who is my long time friend, a man I consider to be my brother, had borrowed the issue, a rare exposure to this magazine for him. I was not too happy about the surgery he had performed, and was concerned since my husband frequently refers to articles in back issues of the LIFE ADVOCATE in researching pro-life events. I knew that when I ultimately returned the LIFE ADVOCATE to him, there would be questions concerning what had been removed - and why. When I questioned Ron about the situation I was so moved by some of the things he said, I wanted to share them with the rest of the pro-life community. My hope is that it might just be the right thing to impact someone, like him who has been somewhat out of touch with the battle for the unborn.

Ron is a two-tour veteran of Viet Nam. He was a medic, and served both in an EVAC hospital and in the field, during some of the heaviest action of that terrible war. He has seen some gruesome sights in his life, but by the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ, has suffered neither the guilt, nor the memory flashbacks that haunt many other vets. In the ten years we have been close friends, I have not known him to dwell on the horrors of his experience. In fact, it surprised me to find how little he refers to Viet Nam other than to describe a friend or an escapade that amused him. Ron, like so many pro-lifers, was active at one time, and even was arrested in a rescue back in the late 1980's. When this war dragged on and clinics were not closed, he, like others, went on with his life, supporting the movement in a more indirect manner.

"What did you cut out of Don's LIFE ADVOCATE, Ron", I asked. Of all the informative articles in this issue, the thing that struck him most was the casualty chart - something that has been around for quite some time, and frankly something that I pass over, with only a rhetorical comment such as "isn't that terrible". Each cross on this chart represents 50,000 people killed by a combat related death for every war the United States has participated in, from the Revolutionary War thru the Gulf War, and then compares those casualties with the deaths sustained by the babies in the war against the unborn. I do not think I will treat this chart lightly again. Ron explained how important "body count" was in Viet Nam. "This was something tangible, a gauge for military commanders and politicians alike, measuring the 'success' of the war" - success measured in blood. In that conflict, 59 thousand Americans were killed and perhaps 200 thousand Vietnamese. In light of the war against the unborn, that is a comparatively small death toll, yet the war had major repercussions, both politically for the nation, and personally for the thousands who served in combat including my buddy Ron. If "body count" was truly an indicator of national interest, why was a war with 259,000 casualties reported and condemned as tragic and immoral in nearly every American periodical of the time, and just 25 years later, the death of 32 million innocent victims glossed over as just a woman exercising her right? Anti-war Demonstrations, sit-ins, even violent confrontations with the authorities were reported on the front page in such a manner as to evoke sympathy for the cause. Those few students shot by National Guard troops at Kent State were applauded in the media as heroes and martyrs to the cause. Had that event occurred in the 1990's for the cause of saving the unborn, the media depiction would likely have been that domestic terrorists had been shot.

For Ron, the two years in a combat zone also had a major impact on his personal life. He said, "I treated maybe 500 people, both Americans and Vietnamese. Some folks don't have their name on that wall because of me - and some folks I worked on, are on that wall anyway. I couldn't save them. There was so many of them dead, but they were only a drop in a bucket compared to the 32 million babies killed by abortion." Trained by this same government to evaluate destruction in terms of body count, the numbers impressed Ron as a measure of how devastating this current war is - and how much blood covers this nation.

Ron told me of an incident that came to his mind, triggered by the chart. One time near his location, some South Vietnamese troops had engaged the enemy in a fire-fight and won. They had lined up the bodies of the enemies dead - side by side - displaying them as trophies. Some sixty bodies stretched approximately thirty feet along the side of the road. Recalling this incident, he wondered how far along a road would the bodies of 32 million slain babies stretch, if the pro-aborts were also to display them as trophies. Assigning an average length of 4" to each baby, allowing for 3 babies per foot, and 5,280 feet per mile, the line of slaughtered infants would stretch from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast - and then some.

The blood covering this nation stretches from" sea to shining sea". The extent of the slaughter expressed in these terms struck home with me as well. Ron framed and posted the chart in his room. "I never want to forget" he said. "When we came home from VietNam and landed in California, crowds of people came out to the airport and called us baby killers. I get the feeling that some of those same folks are supporting the real baby killers in abortion mills right now. We were not killing babies, not intentionally, we didn't want to kill anybody, just behave honorably and get home in one piece. These same folks don't seem to mind the baby killing going on in their own home towns right now. If they do, they sure aren't going out and confronting the real baby killers." Ron continued, " They built that VietNam Memorial Wall. Everybody walks by it and cries - even me. That wall stretches maybe 200 foot long. If we built a memorial wall for the babies killed by abortion it would have to be twenty miles long - easy. Maybe we need to do that. Maybe we need to walk folks past that wall. After we took the concentration camps in Germany at the end of WWII, Eisenhower ordered the towns folk to be marched through the camp, to see the ovens and the open pit where the bodies of murdered prisoners where dumped. Maybe we need to march the church Christians and ministers of the churches passed the bodies of the babies they could have helped to save. "

Maybe we all need to frame and hang that casualty chart where it will be a daily reminder of the body count in this war against the unborn. We can debate the issue of abortion with politicians and theologians ad nauseam, until the fact that babies are dying each day becomes clouded in a mist of rhetoric and "good arguments". Our logic permits us to compromise in subtle ways. Even some of our leaders have backed off defending the babies. They support politicians who would permit babies conceived by rape or incest to be legally murdered. Expediency rather than right has become the measure. Unless we, the church repent, and seek to return to the covering of the Blood of Jesus, and His righteousness, the blood of the innocents covering this land will cry out for judgement. We need to constantly remember the babies being slaughtered. I pray that all Christians will do what Ron has done, and post that chart in their heart - lest we forget.
